Centrifugal Juicer vs Masticating Juicer: The Showdown

There is no doubt that centrifugal juicers and masticating juicers are both winning in their own field. But it’s all down to the way you wanna juice that’ll tell you which is the winner for you. Here’s a list of things you’re gonna want to think about:

  • Do you want to regularly juice greens?
  • How much time do you have for juicing?
  • How much can you afford to spend?
  • Have you owned a juicer before?

I’ll be getting into these questions in a bit. But first up, let’s have a quick breakdown of these two types of juicers. This is how they work.

Centrifugal Juicers

Examples of this type of juicer include the Breville BJE200XL, Breville Juice Fountain Elite and Hamilton Beach 67650. They are characterized by high speeds, quick juicing times and some of them come for way low prices. The name tells us how these machines work, they use centrifugal force. It’s pretty simple really. Fruits and veggies are fed into the juicer, they’re torn apart and pulped by mini blades, then flung against the side of a filter basket – this is where the liquid gold escapes which then runs down into a collection jug. The pulp is either kept in the filter basket or ejected into a waste basket – this just depends on the exact style of centrifugal juicer.

Masticating Juicers

Some of the popular models are Omega J8006, Omega VRT350HD and Hurom Slow Juicer. It gets even more confusing coz there’s two different styles – the older horizontal masticating juicers and the newer vertical masticating juicers. They work in a similar way but even within the “masticating juicer” category, there’s some major differences!

These juicers are characterized by low speeds, high juice yield and longer juicing time. Tell you something else – they make the best juice! Straight up, legit. More on this later. These juicers don’t have any blades, instead the action takes place between the auger and juicing screen. The fruits and veggies are squeezed and ground up by the auger and pushed against the juicing screen. The juice escapes through the screen and the pulp is pushed out a different exit chute.

Now let’s get back to the questions from before:

Do you want to regularly juice greens?

Without a doubt, masticating juicers are way better than centrifugal juicers at getting the juice outta leafy greens.

How much time do you have for juicing?

The less time you have, the more attractive a centrifugal juicer becomes. If you’re not in a hurry, you might wanna think about a masticating juicer.

How much can you afford to spend?

This is a big one. Some centrifugal juicers cost less than 100 bucks. But you’re really lookin’ at over $200 for a masticating juicer.

Have you owned a juicer before?

Most people start out with a centrifugal juicer. You know why? It’s coz they’re cheap! So if you’ve been juicing for a while, you might be ready to have a go with a masticating juicer.
