If you’re reading this article then you already know about the benefits of juice in your diet. Home made’s the best for shure! There’s all kinds of juicers that we could be using: centrifugal juicers (e.g. Breville BJE510XL), horizontal masticating juicers (e.g. Omega J8006) and my favorites, vertical masticating juicers.

Any juicer is better than no juicer. But the way I see it, the new vertical masticating juicers are the top dogs. I’m going to lay out exactly why. We’ll start off looking at the Pros then move on to the Cons. Then you can make up your own mind. Check it out!

Pros

The juice is best! I’m serious y’all. The taste beats what comes out of centrifugal juicers no problem. So what makes it taste so good? It’s all about how these machines work. Slow juicer technology is what it’s all about. If you think about centrifugal juicers for a minute, they spin way fast. We’re talking 1,000s of RPMs. But masticating juicers go much slower. The vertical machines run at around 80 RPM.

For one thing, this means that it takes a bit longer to make juices. I’ll talk about this more soon. When it comes to quality though, slower speeds count! The faster a juicer works, the more air it forces into the juice it makes. More air = more oxidation = more separation. If you get the chance to drink the same juice made in a centrifugal juicer and a masticating one, you’ll be able to taste the difference. Remember the Pepsi Challenge?

Quality of taste and level of nutrition are two of the main factors I love these juicers. But there’s more. After all, horizontal masticating juicers run at low speeds and make highly nutritious drinks. So what makes the vertical units ‘better’? For me, it’s to do with speed. Not speed of the machines’ RPM, they’re the same. But since the vertical ones have bigger augers and bigger holes to feed in fruits and vegetables, they can make juices quicker.

They’re not as fast as centrifugal machines though. That kind of juicer is the daddy of speed. Vertical masticating models though are a great combo between ‘speed’ and quality. That’s why they’re top dog!

Cons

First of all, there’s the cost. If you take a look on Amazon, you’ll see that they’re not budget juicers. So you’ve got to have a bit of cash if you want one.

Next, is speed. If you don’t have time to spend on food prep then you might be better off with a centrifugal juicer. The way I see it though, there’s nothing more important than my health, so I’m gonna make the time to juice!

That’s about it. Keep on juicing!

Even on a tight budget, it’s easy to start juicing for health. The Cheap Black & Decker JE2200B costs less than 50 bucks. In fact, on the Black and Decker website, they’re selling it for $29.99. If you compare the price on Amazon, you might be able to get an even better deal.

If you’re wondering why this juicer is cheaper than the Breville BJE200XL and the Hamilton Beach 67650, it’s because this one is less powerful. The motor is 400 watts. On one hand you might be thinking that less power is a bad thing. This juicer is slower than the other two. But slower speed means there’s going to be a smaller amount of heat being transferred to the juice.

The other big difference between this model and the Breville and Hamilton Beach budget juicers is that the Black & Decker has a narrower feeding tube. This is going to slow down the juicing process.

For the price, this is a decent juicer. If you have more money to spend, then you will be able to get a better machine. But if you’re looking for one of the cheapest centrifugal juicers that gets the job done, you won’t be disappointed with this one.

You can quite easily juice all sorts of fruits and veggies in this juicer. It’s best for apples, beets, carrots and other hard produce. It won’t juice leafy green vegetables very well. You don’t have to worry about taking the seeds out of apples but you sure will have to remove stones from peaches, nectarines and cherries if you want to juice them. Even though you can, it’s probably not a good idea to try and juice frozen fruits. The bottom line is that they’re not going to release much liquid. So it’s best to let them thaw out first.

With all the different kinds of juicers that are available these days it’s important to pick one that’s gonna juice the fruits and veggies you wanna drink. Picking up a citrus juicer is a great idea if you love orange juice, but for making green juices, this isn’t gonna help you at all. There’s loads of other kinds of machines to consider, centrifugal, masticating and twin gear. So which are the best for making green juices?

If you don’t know what a green juice is, it’s basically juices with some green leafy veggies in there. Pretty simple, right? The best juicer for making these drinks are masticating and twin gear juicers. These are models like the Omega J8006 and Green Star GS-1000 juicers. Check out this video. The guy gets way more liquid from the horizontal masticating juicer than the high speed centrifugal one.

Most people would agree that there’s plenty of benefits to centrifugal style juicers but making green juices isn’t one of them. So it really comes down to masticating or twin gear machines if you’re wanting the maximum juice extraction from your veggies. What’s the difference between these two styles?

In a word, cost! That Omega juicer in the video costs under $300. But if you’re wanting a twin gear juicer you’re gonna be looking at spending over $400. How much is a green juice worth to you?

Why? Because it works! It’s the exact same juicer as the Omega J8003 except they come in a different color (the J8003 is white).

Machines like this one are first and foremost juicers but they can also perform many other kinds of food processing. For making green juices, this style of juicer has one of the best reputations going! Check out the videos below to see this juicer in action. It’s easy to use and quick to clean.

Omega J8005 Juice Recipe

I love this video review by FruitMonster. It’s short and to the point and clearly demonstrates just why the Omega series of masticating juicers are so popular. They can juice anything from citrus fruits to leafy greens!

Omega J8005 Compared to Omega J8006

There’s really not very many differences when we compare these two Omega juicers. I’d always recommend the Omega J8006 and it doesn’t really cost all that much more at all (about $20 extra). When we take a look at them, they’ve both got the chrome and black design. There are a few differences though. Their handle attachment is a different design. But the biggest two differences are the auger and the warranty.

The J8005 has a regular plastic auger but the slightly more expensive J8006 comes with a GE Ultem auger. This is 8 times harder. The warranty on the J8006 is also 5 years longer (a full 15 years).

There’s a lot of people who’d agree with that. But if we flip it around a bit, just because bacon might smell good, does this mean we should eat it? Taking cocaine might feel good, but would you recommend it for your kids? We’ve developed a low grade addiction to many of the foods that make up the typical American diet.

Doing the right thing might not seem all that appetizing but once you get used to health foods, the way they taste and how they make you feel, it’s easy to stay on track. Greens are nutritional powerhouses which we should be eating every day. To get even more green goodness into our systems, you might want to consider drinking a green juice as well. These can be green powders – but the best option is really to make yourself a fresh green juice.

What is a Green Juice?

image from Whole Family Fare - click image to visit site

You might be thinking that a green juice is only going to have things like cabbage, collards, kale, lettuce and spinach in it. It’s fair to say that this would be a “green juice” but it would taste pretty bad! Green juices don’t have to be all greens – they just have to contain some greens. So if you can juice up a few cabbage leaves or stalks of kale with some apples and some lemon, that would make a healthy AND tasty green juice.

At juice bars, wheat grass shots are pretty popular. You can make the same sort of thing at home. If you can’t find wheat grass, you can make a green shot out of any leafy green vegetables you have at home.

Why Greens are Good for Us

It’s the nutrients that are in green vegetables that make them so important for our health. They’re loaded with minerals like calcium, iron and magnesium. They’ve got vitamins covered too including most of the B-complex group, vitamin C and vitamin K. Greens are even a source of protein and Omega 3 “good fats”.

Growing your own Garden

One of the cheapest ways to ensure a fresh supply of produce is to grow your own. Not only that, when you grow your own vegetables, you can know exactly what sort of chemicals are, and are not, used. That’s what I love about gardening. I’m able to make my own organic vegetables. Having a small survival garden has a number of benefits. What do you want to grow?

Do you know which is which? It’s the Hamilton Beach 67650 on the left and the Breville BJE200XL on the right. I’ve written detailed reviews of both of these juicers which you can check out. Right now let’s compare these two budget juicers.

Hamilton Beach 67650 and Breville BJE200XL Similarities

They might look a bit different but they’re essentially very similar products.

They both come for under 100 bucks.

They’re both centrifugal juicers.

They’ve both got a wide 3″ feed chute.

They both come with a collection jug and cleaning brush.

Both have powerful motors that operate at a fixed speed.

Hamilton Beach 67650 and Breville BJE200XL Differences

External vs Internal pulp collection – check out the picture above.

Lower cost for the Hamilton Beach 67650 Big Mouth Pro – about $30 less.

Breville juice jug comes with a froth separator attachment.

Both these juicers have hundreds of customer reviews on Amazon and they are both two of the most popular models sold today. These machines do an excellent job of harder produce. So if you’re thinking of juices like apple, carrot, celery and ginger or other juices using hard fruits and veggies, either of these juicers would serve you well. It’s hard to pick the best juicer out of the two. Use the list of similarities and differences above to help you pick the best one for you.

But it turns out that his enthusiasm for this vegetable might have been misplaced. The h2g2 website reports:

The mythical strength-giving properties of spinach are, however, mostly credited to a simple mistake concerning the iron content of the vegetable. In 1870, Dr E von Wolf published figures which were accepted until the 1930s, when they were rechecked. This revealed that a decimal point had been placed wrongly and that the real figure was only one tenth of Dr von Wolf’s claim.

So is our faith in green vegetables misplaced? Do we really need to eat our greens at all?

The thing is, if we take a look at the minerals and vitamins that spinach does contain, we can see that it definitely does have all kinds of goodness. For a full list of its nutrients, go to the USDA Food Database website.

It might surprise you to know that spinach contains 3/4 the amount of beta-carotene as carrots. Vitamin A (which comes from beta-carotene) is well known to benefit our skin, eyes and immune system. Spinach also has tons of iron (even if not quiet as much as Popeye first though), calcium, protein and fiber. It’s a great food to include in our diet as well as our juices.

One thing you wanna think about is that spinach is on the dirty dozen list. These are the vegetables most likely to have higher levels of pesticide residue on them. Because of this, try and buy organic spinach, it’s a much safer option. The nutrient content is gonna be just the same as conventional spinach but it’s what it doesn’t have (harmful pesticide residue) that makes it better for us.

Provided you can find organic spinach, it works well in all kinds of juices. Even Popeye would tell you that straight spinach juice tastes BAD! Mixing it in with some sweet apple works pretty well. If you’re gonna be juicing greens regularly, then the best juicer is gonna be either a masticating or a twin gear machine.

Fitting the Green Star GS-1000 Juicer Together

The Green Star GS-1000 looks relatively similar to most horizontal style masticating juicers (e.g. the Omega J8006). But the way it operates is a fair bit different. While “masticating juicers” have ONE auger. As you might imagine, a twin gear juicer has TWO gears. The diagram below gives a pretty good representation of what happens. Fruits and veggies would get crushed between the two gears which is how their juice is extracted.

The twin gears revolve at 110 RPM. This is a bit faster than most masticating juicers (around 80 RPM) but way slower than centrifugal machines (often 10,000 RPM). For some things, leafy green veggies and grasses, the GS-1000 is completely self feeding, once the greens get caught by the gears, they’re pulled through into the juicer. But for more solid things, carrots and so on, they need much more pressure to push them in. It’s not a race! This isn’t a juicer that you should try to hurry. Just go at the speed of the machine.

This is great model for juicing enthusiasts. If you’re happy spending a while make your juice then cleaning the machine, the Green Star GS-1000 won’t let you down. Besides juicing, there’s all the other functions too including making – baby foods (homogenizing) – nut butters – frozen desserts – bread sticks – pasta (need additional attachment) as well as grinding coffee, herbs and so on.

One of the highlights of this machine is that it has magnets at the center of both the gears. The fruits and veggies getting squeezed between the gears and the juice being released passes through this magnetic field which is supposed to make it mega nutritious.

Pulp Discharge Outlet

Click the image for a larger view.

Green Star GS-1000 Components

Click the table to see the parts in more detail. As you can see, this twin gear juicer is more complex than most centrifugal and masticating juicers. The sheer number of parts makes the clean up that much trickier. Notice that this juicer comes with a plastic plunger AND a wooden plunger! Sticking with the wooden one might be the healthiest choice. Even if the plunger does come into contact with the gears, any wood that is scraped off will just pass thought with the pulp. In case you were wondering, it’s completely non-toxic.
