True Balance
15 09 09 - 23:34 Is hard to achieve.But today I did it. Really.
My first appointment was the Mac the guy who didn't know if it had a wireless card. It didn't. But, it was sitting right next to the router, so I said "why not just plug it in?" thinking maybe the ethernet port was broken or something. It wasn't. So basically the job was "go out to car, get cable, plug in cable"
Then over to the print shop, something was messing up his business card program. Got it sorted.
Then back to the medical supply place. Here's where the balance comes in. Reverse how easy as the first one was, and you have this one. I'm trying to set up a VPN, as I wrote yesterday, but they had the wireless/router DSL equipment rather then the straight one ethernet port one. Well, apparently they only give those out now? So I call frontier about what I can do. He says "turn on bridging" and leads me through this weird crap settings on the DSL thing. Rather then just a checkbox "how do you want me to act?" they have to bury it six screens in and this number and that number. Dumb. But I fill it all in but it's still not doing what I want. So he says, well, that's the settings, call Netgear and they can help.
So I play with it, and mess with it, and finally I get it to work. For about two seconds. The the Netgear just dies. It's still on and everything, but it doesn't respond to any commands. Great. So I call netgear. No solution there. He conferences in Frontier (another 20 minutes wait to get them back on the phone) and this guys says "Oh, we haven't supported bridging for a year and a half." Oh really? Then why did guy #1 happily give me the settings for it? Hummm? So we try a couple of more things. No luck. I got there at like 3:00, it's now almost 6:00. So I've missed my 4:00 by a bunch. With no answers in sight I tell him I'll look into it some more and get there sometime. I may "borrow" my grandmother's single port unit and just switch them. I really wanted to get it to work as is though, I shouldn't have to go through all these machinations to get the router to TURN OFF and just give the netgear the stinking IP address rather then taking it itself. Oh, or buying a static IP for $50 bucks a month extra or whatever.
None of this would have happened if they would just give me, the customer, what I want. I do not want this unit. I want the other unit that does what I want. I don't care if they "don't make them anymore" (yeah right) I'm sure there are some floating around out there someplace. But noooooooooo. So I spent about three hours over there I can't bill for. Great.
Went over to my 4:00 and picked up her system.
I got that comic colored and shaded earlier too, and played a bit of Left4Dead with Sean, Mizzy and Ray tonight.
Couple of appointments tomorrow, mostly dumb stuff, as usual. My car is running great again though, so that's a good sign.
Current Mood: Balanced (on the precipice of madness)
